Our thriller opening

The idea we have selected for our thriller is a bicycle chase and torture sequence. We will keep cross cutting between the bike chase and the torture scene to create a fast paced action thriller opening. To help with the theme of the fast paced opening we have chosen a piece of music to suit the action of the bike chase. We have used Brianstorm by Arctic Monkeys. In the bicycle chase the music is loud and in the torture scene we have the sound of a heartbeat in the background, this creates tension.

There were some problems we encountered when we were filming one of which was that when we filmed in the woods there were often people and dogs walking around in the background. This meant we had to do some shots a few times before we got them correct. Another problem was that we only had three people there and we perhaps needed a couple more. This would have made filming a lot easier. With three people we were not able to do panning shots as we needed all three of us in the shot. If we had four people we would have had somebody to hold the camera. When we were filming at the house for the torture scene it was very bright outside so lighting affected some of our shots. Another problem was that we were not able to get to our prefered location of Swineshead as there was no form of transport to get us there on the day we needed.

Despite the problems we encountered there were many things that went well. One major factor was that on both days of filming at both locations the weather remained dry and didnt rain. Another thing we did well was that both locations of filming exceeded our expectations. The abandoned house was the perfect location for filming the torture scene. We also got every shot that we wanted.

Location of filming for thriller opening

This is the abandoned house on Morton fen which is one of the two locations where we will film our thriller opening. The other location is Bourne woods.

The house is for the torture scenes and we are using the many dirt tracks of Bourne woods for the bike chase.

This is one of the dirt tracks in Bourne woods.

I think that these two locations are suitable for our thriller opening because the abandoned house adds an air of mystery and is quite spooky. The chase through the woods adds some high paced action to the opening of our thriller.

Our thriller opening pitch

These are a few slides from our pitch of our thriller opening. We used this to show our concepts to the class. We got feedback and were asked various questions about each of the three ideas.

Alastairs idea was to film a typical torture scene in an abandoned house. We would have one person tied to a chair and another person cast as the villain.

my idea was to be a simple bike chase through an urban setting so we could use narrow passages and alleyways.

We have decided to combine the 2 ideas. We will cross cut between the bike chase and torture scene.

how we will show our techniques in our prelininary task??

To show shot reverse shot we wil have a conversation in which we will show each of the characters speaking from an over the shoulder shot.

To show match on action we will show myself approaching and opening a door from differen camera angles. We will also show match on action when I approach a chair I then move the chair and sit on it.

to make sure we do not break the 180 degree rule we will keep all shot during the conversation at the same perspective unless we show the movement of the shot changing.

Preliminary task

Our preliminary task is film edit and develop a small production showing that we can use match on action, follow the 180 degree rule and also use shot reverse shot. To do this task we put ourselves into groups and have been asked to create a story board and script a short film.
180 degree rule.

Shot Composition

composition - where objects are placed in the shot. Rule of thirds-

the points of interest are usually where the lines cross.

Golden mean- when composing a shot imagine a diagonal line over the top of it. the points of interest should be on that line.
